Coastal walks
The Island is famous for its beaches. While seasonal bans apply to many from May to
September, these spots remain open for zoomies all year round.
St Helens Duver
Difficulty: Easy (Flat)
Length: 1.5 - 2 miles
Parking: National Trust Car Park (PO33 1XY)
Public transport: Bus route 8 stops nearby in St Helens village.
A gentle coastal spit featuring sand dunes and coastal scrub.

Bembridge Beach
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate (Pebbly)
Length: Flexible (Up to 3 miles)
Parking: Lane End Car Park
Public transport: Bus route 8 to Bembridge.
A wonderful mix of sand and rock pools. Great for exploring under the lifeboat station.
Brook & Compton Bay
Difficulty: Moderate (Steps to beach)
Length: 2 miles (Linear)
Parking: Brook Chine or Hanover Point
Public transport: Island Coaster (seasonal bus).
Rugged, wild, and beautiful. Perfect for fossil hunting. Dogs are welcome year-round between Brook Chine and Hanover Point.
High vista walks
Tennyson Down to The Needles
Difficulty: Moderate (Steep inclines)
Length: 4 miles (Circular)
Parking: High Down Pit (PO39 0HY)
Public transport: The Needles Breezer (seasonal bus) or Bus route 7 to Alum Bay.
The quintessential Island walk. Expansive grass downs with vertical drops - keep dogs on leads near the edge!

Ventnor Downs
Difficulty: Strenuous (Hilly)
Length: 3 - 5 miles
Parking: Multiple NT spots on the Downs
Public transport: Best by car; Bus route 3 stops in Ventnor town (steep climb up).
Huge open spaces at the Island's highest point. Watch out for feral goats and ponies!
Woodland walks
Firestone Copse
Difficulty: Easy (Mostly level)
Length: 1 - 2 miles (Loops)
Parking: Forestry England Car Park (PO33 4SJ)
Public transport: Bus route 9 or 4 stops on the main road (10-min walk).
Sheltered woodland near Wootton. Great for red squirrel spotting.

Parkhurst Forest
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
Length: Up to 4 miles
Parking: Main Car Park off Forest Road
Public transport: Bus route 7 stops near the entrance.
The Island’s second-largest forest with gravel tracks making it accessible year round.
Historic walks
The Yarmouth to Freshwater River Yar Trail
Difficulty: Very Easy (Flat)
Length: 2 miles (one way)
Parking: Yarmouth Harbour or Freshwater
Public transport: Bus route 7 serves both ends perfectly.
A flat, accessible path following the old railway line along the estuary.

Carisbrooke Castle Loop
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 1.5 miles
Parking: Castle Car Park (PO30 1XY)
Public transport: Bus route 38 or 7.
Walk the perimeter of the castle walls and through the rolling meadows nearby.
Always respect the "Leads On" signs on your walks, particularly near livestock on the Downs and on cliff edges where winds can be unpredictable. Check the tide times before heading to the beaches to ensure plenty of room for running!
