Description

Apartment 5 at Highlands is a spacious two bedroom apartment sleeping 4 with private entrance, down 6 steps, in an imposing cliff top location.

Taking its name from the imposing Victorian residence that stood on the cliff top site for over 100 years, it was originally built for the Lord Mayor of London, Sir James Thomson Ritchie, and subsequently used by Reverend William Page Roberts, Bishop of Salisbury, for his final years. It was later owned by the McAuslane family, who turned it into a well known hotel. After its closure, it was then used by Upper Chine School for its final years.

After being left for a decade, the current Highlands was then constructed, a grand and impressive mock Georgian manor house that lived up to its predecessor in terms of scale and views across Shanklin. However, it was never finished and derelict, open to the elements, for a decade. Now, after an extensive refurbishment and conversion, it is now restored into 5 spacious, luxurious apartments.

Apartment 5 is a garden floor apartment accessed via a private entrance down 6 steps with direct access to communal garden. It has a king-size bedroom with en-suite and twin bedrooms. There is a good-size bathroom and large flowing open plan kitchen/diner and lounge running the length of the apartment.

All of the apartments benefit from oak furniture and leather sofas, oak floored living areas with fitted kitchens with granite worktops and all your key appliances, 32″ LED TV with Freesat and DVD and free wi-fi. Communal gardens are available for all apartments to enjoy with seating available alongside off road parking and cycle parking bays.

The building, Highlands, benefits from spectacular panoramic sea, town and countryside views around the building, going across to Sandown Bay, Shanklin town and the Downs towards Ventnor. The property is found on the coastal path between Shanklin and Sandown and just down the road from National Trust land and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also a few minutes walk from the picturesque Old Village and its thatched cottages, plus shops, pubs, restaurants and the main town, as well as the cliff top, Esplanade and Shanklin’s beaches.

For larger families, there are 4 other apartments sleeping 3 to 5 each over the four levels at Highlands, Shanklin Manor, sleeping 4, and The Priory, sleeping 4, close-by, enabling large families to holiday together.

Shanklin Town

One of the most popular holiday destinations on the Isle of Wight, Shanklin has everything you need for a great family holiday or to go to with friends or as a couple. Sandown Bay, which stretches from Culver Down in the North 8.5 miles through Sandown, Lake and Shanklin to the South was the winner of the Beach Of The Year in the Countryfile Magazine Awards 2019.

From the long wide sandy beach, perfect for bucket and spade days to the wooded ravine which is Shanklin Chine and the Old Village with its independent shops, restaurants and pubs, you won’t be short of something to do. Shanklin has all the charm of a proper seaside town and set against the dramatic sandstone cliffs, the beach is one of the most stunning walks to take on the Island. You could rent a beach hut and watch the world go by or try your hand at the water sports on offer or have a paddle.

Whether you’re young or old or somewhere in between there’s plenty to do for everyone. With its mixtures of green spaces, beach and town, parks and gardens, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Sit in the peaceful and tranquil Rylstone Gardens, take a picnic and just relax. Have a look at their programme of events and you may find yourself being serenaded by a band on the bandstand.

Go and see a show at Shanklin Theatre which has an amazing mix of professional and amateur shows as well as concerts and comedy to choose from. Take the kids to the Esplanade and spend some pennies on traditional seaside games and amusements and take advantage of the wide range of pubs and cafes or walk through Shanklin Chine and admire this unique gorge with its rare plants and delightful waterfall.

The Old Village with its pretty thatched cottages and history, housing gift shops and tea rooms is the perfect spot for a cream tea or a light lunch. There are also miles of cycle ways and footpaths for you to enjoy so come prepared to get yourself some all- important vitamin sea and during the summer months, there are carnivals and the Shanklin Regatta to enjoy, which add to the excitement of any holiday.

Cream tea? Light lunch? Traditional fish and chips? Locally caught crab and lobster? Whatever your foodie pleasure, you’ll find it in Shanklin. From traditional cafes, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants to an ice cream beside the seaside, you’ll have no problem pleasing everyone. Lots of venues have live music, quizzes and entertainment at weekends and during the summer months so it’s well worth having a look to see what’s going on. Many pubs and restaurants serve local ales and produce sourced from the Island so that you really will be able to taste and eat the Wight.

We've just come home after a lovely stay. The apartment was beautiful and spotless. We had all the equipment we needed, and instructions, when required were clear in the information folder. The beds were comfortable with luxurious linen. The staff were very helpful with a couple of queries I had and replied to messages promptly. Access to the bus route is ideal, with a stop at the end of the road. We used it several times to get around the island. I would definitely recommend this property for its location close to Shanklin Old Village and the Chine and easy access to the rest of the island by bus or car.

Everyone wants you to write a review these days. I'm usually happy to do so because I know honest feedback can be helpful for both supplier and customer but, please, just one request per supply! Please see my first review for a more complete opinion of this stay. Suffice it to say, No. 5 Highlands is excellent. Highly recommended.
