Shanklin Town

One of the most popular holiday destinations on the Isle of Wight, Shanklin has everything you need for a great family holiday or to go to with friends or as a couple. Sandown Bay, which stretches from Culver Down in the North 8.5 miles through Sandown, Lake and Shanklin to the South was the winner of the Beach Of The Year in the Countryfile Magazine Awards 2019.

From the long wide sandy beach, perfect for bucket and spade days to the wooded ravine which is Shanklin Chine and the Old Village with its independent shops, restaurants and pubs, you won’t be short of something to do. Shanklin has all the charm of a proper seaside town and set against the dramatic sandstone cliffs, the beach is one of the most stunning walks to take on the Island. You could rent a beach hut and watch the world go by or try your hand at the water sports on offer or have a paddle.

Whether you’re young or old or somewhere in between there’s plenty to do for everyone. With its mixtures of green spaces, beach and town, parks and gardens, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Sit in the peaceful and tranquil Rylstone Gardens, take a picnic and just relax. Have a look at their programme of events and you may find yourself being serenaded by a band on the bandstand.

Go and see a show at Shanklin Theatre which has an amazing mix of professional and amateur shows as well as concerts and comedy to choose from. Take the kids to the Esplanade and spend some pennies on traditional seaside games and amusements and take advantage of the wide range of pubs and cafes or walk through Shanklin Chine and admire this unique gorge with its rare plants and delightful waterfall.

The Old Village with its pretty thatched cottages and history, housing gift shops and tea rooms is the perfect spot for a cream tea or a light lunch. There are also miles of cycle ways and footpaths for you to enjoy so come prepared to get yourself some all- important vitamin sea and during the summer months, there are carnivals and the Shanklin Regatta to enjoy, which add to the excitement of any holiday.

Cream tea? Light lunch? Traditional fish and chips? Locally caught crab and lobster? Whatever your foodie pleasure, you’ll find it in Shanklin. From traditional cafes, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants to an ice cream beside the seaside, you’ll have no problem pleasing everyone. Lots of venues have live music, quizzes and entertainment at weekends and during the summer months so it’s well worth having a look to see what’s going on. Many pubs and restaurants serve local ales and produce sourced from the Island so that you really will be able to taste and eat the Wight.

We enjoyed our stay and would happily return. The flat was spacious for the two of us and was well equipped with a large fridge/ freezer and dish washer. There is a Lidl or Coop so you can do a shop and stock up. Nice touch to have milk and biscuits for us on arrival. WiFi was fine and no issues. The views from the bay windows were amazing. The bed was comfortable and hot water and heating all worked fine and radiators heated quickly. It was a good location and a walk down the hill to the old town where we got some great fish and chips from the happy haddock and about 15 mins from the beach (the coastal path was closed so you couldnt follow that down to the beach). Along the beach there is also crazy golf. Its also a short walk to a bus stop which we used to get the number 3 to Sandown. You can easily drive to all the major attractions. We were able to park fine but should the car park be at capacity in busier months it could be hard if there are too many cars. Slight issue getting the key out the compartment box (make sure you move the little black toggle thing). Having that clearer on the instructions would be helpful as it wasnt obvious to us. The view was great but we had heavy rain one day which dripped through the timber frame and we had to put towels down. The apartment was clean but could do a slight tidy up (removing dust in bedroom and communal area behind the telly). Kitchen and bathroom were very clean though. Other reviews mention lady birds and there were several there in the living room. The Sky box didnt work and they have a dvd player so bring your own. No streaming like Netflix which would be good for people to log into but it wasnt a smart tv. It is just free view. We did make use of their cluedo board game. All in all wed be very happy to stay again and make the most of the balcony in the warmer months. A nice place to stay - convenient, good value and the team at Island Holiday Homes were really friendly and helped book the ferry which was great.

The key safe was very tricky to get the key out and put back in. Communal area was very spacious and very secure. Apartment itself, generally very good. Sofa has probably seen better days, the 2 single chairs wasn't very comfortable sitting on for a long period of time. There was a lot of ladybirds at the living room window which probably came through the sash window. It was windy for a couple of days and the sash windows in the bedroom kept banging in the night which made it difficult to have a good night sleep. Washing machine was nice and quiet. Cooking facility was fantastic. Bathroom was fine, plenty of hot water and heating was perfect. Not sure if the washing machine could have gone back a little further as the cutlery draw kept hitting the buttons when bringing out and pushing back in. As being parents of a young child we think the roller blinds need to have a safety device on the cords and chains. Cushions and pillows need renewing. Parking was very good. Generally it was fine for us 3.
