Yarmouth Town

Yarmouth town is located on the North-West of the Isle of Wight, and acts as one of the gateways to the Island with one of the main ferry services operating from its harbour.

The historic port town sits at the mouth of the River Yar and contains some of the oldest architecture on the Isle of Wight, including a 16th Century castle.

Tapnell Farm Park is the perfect place to enjoy some family time, and is perfect to visit in all weathers. Meet the wallabies, visit the play barn and enjoy spending time with the animals in the farmyard barn.

The harbour at Yarmouth is always very busy with both ferries and smaller boats, and the town itself offers a good variety of things to do for visitors.

The history of the town is very evident as you walk round and a trip along the Grade 2 listed pier is highly recommended for views across The Solent, and is also known locally for being a great spot for fishing.

Yarmouth Castle, which is tucked away to the side of the ferry dock, is also a great place for sea views and family picnics during the warmer months.

Other popular pastimes are walks and exploring in the local area with two “Sites of Special Scientific Interest” nearby, the estuary of the River Yar and Bouldnor and Hamstead to the East of the town.

There is a road bridge over the river estuary which heads out of the town, and a short distance along is Fort Victoria Country Park, a Victorian gun battery which now houses a number of local attractions.

It is also set in a beautiful country park, with some spectacular coastline, making it another good spot to explore.

Yarmouth offers a wide and varied selection of pubs and restaurants, to suit all palates and pockets together with coffee shops and cafes. There are a selection of boutique style shops, a fantastic deli, convenience store and chandlers. Public transport links are good and you'll also find walking and cycling routes along either the beach or the banks of the River Yar to take in the outstanding natural beauty of the nature reserve. If you make it to the bridge you'll be rewarded by the splendour of All Saints Church and equally a refreshing beverage and a meal at the Red Lion pub or if you would rather fuel up and walk off your lunch, start at Off the Rails, a licenced eatery converted from what was once Yarmouth railway station.

The Yarmouth Gaffers Festival is one of the longest running events on the Isle of Wight.

Just to the East of Yarmouth the Rhythmtree World Music Festival takes place at Shalfleet.

Rhythmtree is quickly establishing itself as one of the best new music festivals in the UK and attracts artists from all over the globe.

We have visited Gove Cottage for about 10years now each summer. In the last year or two we have been a little disappointed with the Garden, which used to be lovely, but is now a little not loved. However the cottage remains comfortable, and is very convenient foe everyting within the town, and the parking space is a real bonus. We will continue to visit as often as we can.

The location of Grove Cottage gave us access to the town of Yarmouth. We were only a couple of minutes walk from the bus station and harbour. The Cottage although very oldy worldy was very comfortable. The crockery reminded me of my childhood as my parents used to have the same plates with the exact pattern. My wife and I would stay there again.
