Description

Englefield is located in Ventnor, which is situated on south coast of the island positioned above Bonchurch on the eastern fringe with outstanding sea views. Please note that the access to Englefield involves a number of steps and a sloped pathway so may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues.

This chalet bungalow has two double bedrooms, a twin bedroom, a shower room on the ground floor, a bathroom upstairs, kitchen, dining room, lounge and sunroom with a large bay window with fantastic sea views.

At the front of the house, there is a car parking bay (for one car) and a stunning terrace where you can soak up the spectacular seascape and to the rear, there is a beautifully maintained garden that backs onto downland.

Situated on the outskirts of Ventnor, Bonchurch is a beautiful village, nestling on the side of St Boniface down, leading down to the sea. The seafront has a safe shingle/sand beach with rock pools, ideal for children. From the shore you can take a level walk along the revetment towards Ventnor, passing Wheelers Bay and ending in the harbour where you can purchase the catch of the day. In the village itself is a large wildlife pond, home to ducks, herons and carp, surrounded by trees and plants and floodlit at night, this is a magical place to sit and relax. For dining out within the village The Bonchurch Inn offers excellent cuisine.

Old St Boniface Church in Bonchurch dates from the 11th century, with the bell cote dating from the 16th century as does the bell. The south porch was added in the 19th century. It was replaced by St. Boniface Church in 1848. After the new church was built the old church went into a long sleep and wasn't used for decades.

The Victorian town of Ventnor benefits from a main shopping street, with a range of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs. The Esplanade has a crescent shaped sand and shingle beach and a small harbour, where fresh seafood can be purchased. There are several cafes and pubs; the popular ‘Spyglass Inn’ enjoys outstanding sea views and family entertainment. The Smoking Lobster with its Asian seafood fusion food is a great place to relax and enjoy the superb views across the English Channel. As is The Terrace wine bar. Alternatively stroll along the Cliff Path to the famous Ventnor Botanical Gardens and down towards the picturesque Steephill Cove.

There are a number of great restaurants in Ventnor including True Food, The Bistro, Stripped and Cantina along with Chinese and Indian restaurants. Many of the cafes provide take-aways.

Ventnor Botanic Garden lies in the remarkable microclimate at the heart of the famous 'Undercliff.' This unique garden is protected from the cold northerly winds by chalk downs. In addition to enjoying the lovely gardens, it also hosts events and exhibitions and there is a restaurant serving local produce, and Café on-site for refreshments; lunch or coffee and cake!

Ventnor Town

Ventnor on the South coast of the Isle of Wight is a picturesque seaside resort, and one of Britain's most famous Victorian health resorts due to its unique micro-climate.

The town lies beneath St Boniface Down (the highest point on the Isle of Wight) and for the most part is built on the side of a steep hill leading down to the seafront and beach.

The beach huts that line the back of the beach are converted Victorian “bathing machines” and are available to hire, along with deckchairs and private areas.

Ventnor has plenty of things to do both in the town and nearby.

Ventnor Beach is a great suntrap, and the sand and shingle beach is great for sunbathing and family swimming.

Ventnor Marina and the bandstand development are very prominent on the seafront and offer a great viewing platform to look out to sea, and the Ventnor Haven Fishery sells the best in local crab and lobster.

Opposite the marina the spectacular Cascade Gardens run down the side of the cliff where the main road zig-zags its way back up into the main town.

Further along there is a children’s paddling pool which features a giant map of the Isle of Wight, and from here there are great walks to Wheelers Bay and Bonchurch along the Sea Wall.

A short distance from the seafront at the Western side of the town you can stroll through the beautiful Victorian Ventnor Park. This leads onto the famous Ventnor Botanic Gardens at the Undercliff, where the town’s micro-climate can be truly appreciated in a 22 acre sub-tropical paradise, see if you can spot the indigenous wall lizards here.

A short walk from here and you will discover one of the Isle of Wight’s best kept secrets, Steephill Cove, which is one of the most relaxing beaches on the Island.

Along Ventnor esplanade there are several pubs, cafes and restaurants offering a variety of food and refreshments, with a number of alternative places to eat further into town.

With the local fisheries there are some great fish and seafood options available at many of the eateries, and some of the local hotels are highly recommended for their fine dining experiences.

In recent years Ventnor has become the regular host of several big arts and culture events, with the Isle of Arts Festival and Ventnor Fringe.

It is also one of the Isle of Wight’s main carnival towns, with daytime and illuminated processions usually taking place during the summer months.

A short drive along the coast is one of the Isle of Wight’s best known attractions, Blackgang Chine, and regular events are hosted here to entertain all the family.

You can enjoy the spectacular scenery from the top deck of one of the regular buses that serves the town.

Catch a bus northwards to Shanklin, Sandown & Ryde, or travel across the Island to Godshill, Newport or Cowes.

Beautiful views from the front and the back of this property. Comfy and warm. Upstairs bedroom not really as good as the 2 on the ground floor. Kitchen facilities excellent, with nice dining room, again lovely views both ends. Well equipped. Off road parking for my car. Convenient for a bus stop, with very good services all round island.

Excellent location, not suitable for anyone with difficulty going uphill. Very well equipped, but carpets and furniture need to be refreshed, as very musty odour that clears when windows open. Parking off road but slightly awkward access Overall good stay
