Description

Helms House sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms and is situated in the beautiful village of St Helens overlooking the village green. The accommodation has a master bedroom with a king size bed and en-suite bathroom, a twin bedroom, 2 rooms with king size beds (zip & link) and a family bathroom. The lounge has comfortable seating and leads through to the dining room and well-equipped kitchen. There is also a utility room, downstairs shower room and study. From the dining room you can access the enclosed garden via the patio doors with outdoor dining space. Parking is to the front of the property for 2 cars and there is also a garage for a small car or guests’ storage.

St Helens Village is on the East Coast of the Isle of Wight between the villages of Bembridge and Seaview. St Helens’ greens are an integral part of the village life with regular sports played throughout the year. The village also has a local corner shop, two restaurants, a public house and a children’s playground.

St Helens beach is within walking distance of Helms House. Here you will find the remains of the original old church which was built on the seafront. Just off the coast is St Helens Fort which was built around 1867. There is also a lovely cafe/restaurant for you to enjoy a relaxing meal with stunning views. Close to the beach is St Helens Duver which was previously a golf course but is now owned by the National Trust. The Duver has a large car park and has views across to Bembridge Harbour and the RSPB conservation area. It is an ideal area for walking and outdoor games and Tactisle Watersports is located at the nearby marina. There is another cafe and a water taxi ferries passengers to Bembridge beach. Mackerel fishing trips operate from the harbour and there are two sailing clubs.

Helms House is an ideal holiday home for families, walkers, cyclists, sailors, anglers and bird watchers with many public footpaths nearby.

Location Hightlights

Ryde Town

Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight, and with its prominent position along the seafront and hovercraft and passenger ferry links it is little wonder it is often referred to as “The Gateway to the Island”.

In addition to an expanse of sandy beaches which stretch right along the town, Ryde has a great selection of boutique shops, museums and galleries for you to visit along with lots of other things to see and do along its esplanade.

Ryde offers a great variety of things to do which will interest all ages, not least of which are the hovercraft and catamaran ferry from which you can travel to and from the mainland.

Hovertravel are the world’s oldest hovercraft operator and operate the last remaining hovercraft passenger service in Britain, whereas a trip on the Wightlink catamaran service will take you down Ryde’s recently restored early 19th century pier, which carries both vehicle traffic and train services.

Head along Ryde esplanade and you will encounter a number of great places for family entertainment, including the Superbowl and LaserQuest.

Further along there is a fun fair for young children and a very popular canoe lake which leads on to Ryde’s sandy beaches.

At low tide the sea goes out a long way making it a popular place for sports and outdoor activities, and a regular venue for beach soccer tournaments.

Seaview Village

Seaview sits to the eastern end of the town of Ryde, and is a unique village with extensive views across the sea and Solent.

Seaview has a reputation for being an upmarket resort, and as such is very popular with tourists. During the summer months the village becomes a busy centre for sailing and water sports.

There are some highly regarded places to eat in Seaview and the nearby area with a great variety of restaurants and gastro pubs offering a wonderful range of food and drink, as well as a café near Puckpool Park.

Frequent buses link the East Wight with both Ryde and Newport.

The location in St Helens was convenient for travelling by car to many of the visitor attractions and to/from the ferry terminal at Fishbourne. However, Helms House is on a surprisingly busy road which made the parking space quite difficult to enter and leave, especially squeezing in 2 cars. There was a lot of traffic noise late at night and in the early morning (a noisy motorbike regularly roared past at about 5.45 am!) - this was accentuated because the windows needed to be open due to the hot weather. The fan that was provided in the house unfortunately did not work. The holiday house was reasonably priced and was fairly clean and well equipped, so despite the location problems I still felt it was value for money. My biggest disappointment was that I'd asked for a highchair and stairgate to be provided. The house notes said the highchair was stored in a bedroom - it wasn't, and we only found it towards the end of the week lurking in the garage, folded under a dirty cover. I do feel it should have been set up and thoroughly cleaned before we arrived. I'd also specifically requested Island Holiday Homes to ask the cleaners to assemble the stairgate. When we arrived with our lively 2-year-old, we were immediately faced with assembling it ourselves - not the best welcome. For these reasons I would not recommend the property to another family with a young child.
