Ventnor, on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, is a picturesque seaside town and one of Britain’s most famous Victorian health resorts, renowned for its unique microclimate.
The town sits beneath St Boniface Down, the highest point on the Isle of Wight, and is largely built along a steep hillside that leads down to the seafront and beach.
Lining the back of the beach are colourful beach huts, converted from Victorian “bathing machines”, which are available to hire, along with deckchairs and private seating areas.
Ventnor offers plenty to see and do both within the town and the surrounding area. Ventnor Beach is a wonderful suntrap, with a sand and shingle shoreline ideal for sunbathing and family swimming.
Ventnor Marina and the bandstand development are prominent features of the seafront, providing excellent viewpoints across the sea. Nearby, Ventnor Haven Fishery sells some of the finest locally caught crab and lobster.
Opposite the marina, the spectacular Cascade Gardens cascade down the cliffside, following the zig-zagging main road back up into the town. Further along the seafront, a children’s paddling pool features a giant map of the Isle of Wight. From here, scenic coastal walks lead to Wheelers Bay and Bonchurch along the sea wall.
A short distance west of the seafront, you can stroll through the beautiful Victorian Ventnor Park, which leads on to the famous Ventnor Botanic Gardens in the Undercliff. This 22-acre sub-tropical paradise showcases the town’s microclimate at its best—keep an eye out for the island’s indigenous wall lizards.
Just a short walk beyond lies one of the Isle of Wight’s best-kept secrets: Steephill Cove, a peaceful and unspoilt beach perfect for relaxation.
Along Ventnor Esplanade you’ll find a selection of pubs, cafés and restaurants offering a wide variety of food and refreshments, with even more dining options located further into the town. Thanks to the local fisheries, fresh fish and seafood feature prominently on many menus, and several local hotels are highly recommended for their fine dining experiences.
In recent years, Ventnor has become a vibrant cultural hub, hosting popular events such as the Isle of Arts Festival and Ventnor Fringe. It is also one of the Isle of Wight’s main carnival towns, with both daytime and illuminated processions taking place during the summer months.
A short drive along the coast brings you to Blackgang Chine, one of the island’s most famous attractions, offering regular events and entertainment for the whole family.
You can also enjoy the island’s spectacular scenery from the top deck of one of the regular bus services that serve the town, with routes north to Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde, or across the island to Godshill, Newport and Cowes.
